Wednesday, March 3, 2010

The Court held its regularly scheduled meeting in the Mee Room on the 3rd Floor of davisMemorial Union at 8 p.m. Chief Justice Missy Whitney yielded the chair to Vice Chief Justice Ryan Meyerhoff. All members were present for all votes.

Court Discussion

Justice Meyerhoff proposed changes to the Judicial Codes that eliminates the two day minimum notice to which a litigant may challenge the impartiality of a participating Justice so that the challenge can take place at the start of the main hearing, reduced the minimum notice period for party notification and public notice of a hearing, and placed the scheduling of a pre-hearing entirely at the initiative of the Court rather than the litigants. The changes were adopted without objection.

Justice Meyerhoff brought up the question of what to do about the Request for Deliberation, and the Court came to the consensus that it would await the resolution of the proposed Attorney General position from the political branches to address its concerns.

The Court entered closed session to discuss the questions it wished to submit to the interviewing committee for Court vacancies. The interviews take place Friday, and the nominations must be submitted for the March 11 Senate meeting before President Chatham's term expires.

Public Discussion

ASUCD President-elect Jack Zwald asked Chief Justice Missy Whitney for a ride home and offered to go out for milkshakes with members of the Court. The Chief Justice accepted. The Court subsequently entered closed session before adjourning.
